Background To NEDTL
In 1983 a group of 18 driving enthusiasts met at Aldby Park near York and formed the North East Driving Club.
At that time there were several national 3-day Horse Driving Trials being held throughout the country, but there were no local events for people to get started at – so for those keen to have a go at carriage driving, it was really a case of “in at the deep end”.
The founder members felt that as a group of local enthusiasts they could surely organise some one day events to encourage people to have a go at carriage driving without having to incur the expense involved in travelling long distances around the country.
NEDTL Today
Over the years since then there has been much progress made and now NEDTL events are on a par with those held Nationally by British Carriagedriving.
However, we hope that the early objectives set out by the founding members back in 1983 remain as fundamental and important today as they were then.
These objectives are:
- To enjoy friendly competition
- To maintain the welfare of our horses
- To improve the standards of driving
- To arrive home safely having had a pleasant weekend with friends
Since those early days the Club has gone from strength to strength and now holds over fifteen outdoor events from March to September, as well as a series of indoor events throughout the winter, both of which offer drivers the chance to qualify to take part in National Championships.
