Our sport needs new volunteers!
Driving is succumbing to the worrying trend that is affecting all sports
- not just ours - with a serious decline in the number of new volunteers.
No driving event could exist without a huge team of helpers - dressage stewards and writers, marathon timekeepers, obstacle stewards and
course crossing marshals, cones arena and collecting ring stewards - all equally important and essential to the smooth running of a competition.
But it is interesting to consider that over half our existing “hardcore” of regular stewards came into the sport without any prior knowledge of
driving; indeed many of them had no previous experience of horses, and were drawn in by friends and relatives already involved.
Most of our events take place in the grounds of stately homes and by becoming a volunteer with NEDTL you will be able to visit some of
the most picturesque locations in our area free of charge. Often the marathon will take in areas which are not normally open to the public.
There will be something for everyone, the not so active can man obstacles, section starts and finishes. For the more active we need help
in setting up and taking down events, ideal for the more practical among us as most of the obstacles are built 'on site' and need
to be dismantled afterwards. No one will be 'thrown in at the deep end' we pair new volunteers with experienced stewards / organisers
so there is a chance to make new friends whilst learning how our sport works.
The sport of carriage driving has gained a somewhat elitist reputation but nothing could be farther from the truth. Our club encompasses
people from all walks of life, we are a friendly bunch and will make you feel very welcome.
The sport is lucky to have the benefit of some very loyal and long-standing stewards - but they are not getting any younger, and it is
essential that we encourage some new people to join us.
If you can help in any way please contact our helpers coordinator Penny Hartley or download THIS FORM. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
